What's the difference between compostable and biodegradable?
There's a lot of confusion in the world these days and it is important to be aware of what you are buying.
Biodegradable cling wrap usually means that product was made from petroleum plastic and an organic additive was blended in. This means it breaks down much quicker when exposed to sunlight and moisture, but sadly it breaks down into micro plastics that then flow into our ecosystems and never disappear.
Compostable cling wrap can be made from many things. If it is certified then it must breakdown in a compost pile in under 180 days and leave behind zero toxins.
So what is Great Wrap made from?
Our old formula that is certified home and garden compostable is made from PLA + PBAT. PLA usually requires intensive agriculture. We want to offer products that solve problems, not create them. The new formula for our home compostable cling wrap is made mainly from potato waste. The materials we use are all certified compostable and the product will be certified compostable in the coming weeks.
Is it microwave safe?
Only at a low heat for short periods of time. Great Wrap will melt a medium or high heats.
What if it doesn't end up in a compost pile?
Composting our product is the best result as it can be repurposed and used in your garden or by your local council. If Great Wrap ends up in landfill then it will break down in 1 - 3 years. If it it sits on your shelf then it will last about 2 years.
Who are we?
We are Jordy and Julia Kay. Julia was an architect and Jordy is a former winemaker. We were disgusted by the amount waste caused by our industries so we decided to do something about it. We developed our product for 2 years before launching the world's first certified compostable pallet wrap in March 2020.
